Knicks' Embarrassing Performance: Fans Boo as Mavericks Dominate (2026)

The New York Knicks are in a freefall, and the fans are letting them hear it. The boos that once echoed through Madison Square Garden have turned into a deafening silence, a stark indication of the team's struggles. This season, brimming with high expectations, has quickly spiraled into a nightmare, leaving fans and analysts alike searching for answers.

It started with boos, early and often. The Mavericks, a team with a losing record and a roster riddled with injuries, were dominating the Knicks. Cooper Flagg's coast-to-coast play, putting the Mavericks up by 18 points in the second quarter, triggered the initial wave of disapproval. The lead ballooned to 20, then 30, before halftime, with the Knicks trailing by 28 points. By the final buzzer, most fans had already left, a symbolic gesture of their disappointment. Even owner James Dolan didn't return to his seat after halftime. This loss is arguably the team's worst of the year, and it comes at a time when the Knicks seem to be setting new lows regularly.

Adding insult to injury, the Knicks were at full strength, while the Mavericks were severely depleted. There were no excuses. Yet, the Knicks were trounced 114-97 at home, extending their losing streak to four games. This marks their second four-game skid in just 11 games, going 2-9 in that span. Since their NBA Cup triumph, their record is a dismal 7-11. In a season where championship aspirations were high, they now sit just 1 ¹/₂ games above the play-in tournament.

Jalen Brunson's simple, yet telling, response when asked why: "No."

It feels like ages ago when Coach Mike Brown was praised for the Knicks' success. Now, the alarm bells are ringing louder. Mavericks coach Jason Kidd, whom the Knicks reportedly wanted to hire, delivered a significant blow to Brown's team. Josh Hart didn't hold back, stating the team's performance was "embarrassing" and that the effort was lacking.

But here's where it gets controversial... The Knicks' defense was virtually non-existent, allowing the Mavericks to shoot 49% from the field and 47% from three-point range. Ball handlers easily penetrated the paint. Coach Brown's halftime speech was direct: "Lock in and do your f–king — do your job." They did outscore the Mavericks by 11 in the second half, but it was too little, too late.

Max Christie had a season-high 26 points, going 8-for-10 from three-point range. Naji Marshall added 19 points, and Flagg contributed 18. The Knicks, on the other hand, struggled offensively, shooting only 40% from the field and 29% from three-point range. This is the fourth time since January 1st that they've failed to score 100 points.

When Karl-Anthony Towns went on a solo 7-0 run, the cheers felt almost like pity. Brunson, returning from an ankle injury, struggled, shooting 9-for-24 and finishing with 22 points. Towns received a flagrant foul, but it was the only fight the Knicks showed. The bench, except for Mitchell Robinson, offered nothing.

"They just came out more hungry," Miles McBride said. Robinson, with 12 points, 15 rebounds, and 2 blocks, was the only bright spot. Hart, returning from an ankle injury, admitted he came back before he was fully recovered due to the team's struggles. His presence didn't make a difference.

"If I could," Hart said, "I don't think we'd be in this stretch."

And this is the part most people miss... The most concerning aspect of this collapse is the lack of a clear solution.
