Prepare to be amazed! Sri Lanka has just unveiled a breathtaking treasure: a colossal purple star sapphire, touted as the largest of its kind ever discovered. This gem, weighing a staggering 3,563 carats, is making waves, and here's why you should care.
This magnificent stone, dubbed the "Star of Pure Land," was presented in Colombo, Sri Lanka, by its owners, who are now ready to put it up for sale. Experts estimate its value to be a jaw-dropping $300 million at the very least. That's a lot of sparkle!
According to gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe, the "Star of Pure Land" is the largest documented natural purple star sapphire globally. He emphasized its exceptional quality, noting its well-defined asterism – the star-like effect caused by intersecting light rays. "It has six rays asterism. That’s something special out of all the other stones," he explained. This unique feature adds to the gem's allure and value.
The owners, choosing to remain anonymous for security, revealed that the sapphire was unearthed in a gem pit near Rathnapura, a Sri Lankan town famously known as the "city of gems," back in 2023. Interestingly, it was initially purchased alongside other gems. It wasn't until about two years later that its true significance was realized. The stone has since been meticulously polished and certified by two independent laboratories.
But here's where it gets controversial... The estimated value, placed between $300 and $400 million by international valuers, is a testament to the gem's rarity and the prestige of Sri Lankan sapphires. Sri Lankan sapphires are known for their unique color, clarity, and the mesmerizing shimmer they possess.
